Fiction or Nonfiction?

Both. A good book is a good book. Who cares whether a captivating story is fiction or not?

Is it harder to write funny or sad?

Funny. Can't tell you how many time I've tried to be funny, and then gone back to those articles years later thinking "Why did no one tell me this was not funny?" Sadness is in the content; funny is in the delivery; a good story needs a dash of both.

Long form or short form?

Both. "The Accident" is an amazing piece of flash-fiction by Dave Eggers and it'll take you one minute, if that, that to finish. "The Poisonwood Bible", by Barbara Kingsolver, is a huge novel that could emotionally crush a bison, and physically crush a terrier. Both works are unforgettable.

Poetry or prose?

I prefer prose because I find poems disorienting, BUT everyone everyone everyone should see a slam poet perform.

Boxers or kickboxers?

Boxer briefs.

Piece that you read and said Wish I’d thought of that?

One of my best friends wrote a satirical essay about the Disney Princesses meeting up years after they tied the knot to their myriad princes. They rendezvous at an Olive Garden type restaurant and have nothing but dry resentment for one another. It was the Real Housewives of Disney, and I'm pretty sure it preceded that amazing sketch on SNL where Kristen Wiig played an alcoholic Cinderella. Golden.

Cloned or frozen?

If I have a clone, I'll try to do something frisky and irreversible with myself... so, yes. Cloned.

Book you read and reread?

I don't reread. Ever. I have purchased the same book twice, though.

When writing is going well…

Someone else is involved.

Desert Island Book?

I said I prefer nonfiction, but Jandy Nelson's "I'll Give You the Sun" is pure YA magic. When I do re-read a book, it'll be that one.
