Allison K Williams - Flash Nonfiction Funny survey responses
Fiction or Nonfiction?
Usually nonfiction, but I’m writing a YA novel right now, a modern Oliver Twist set in New York.
Is it harder to write funny or sad?
Funny. Sad is just telling the story, truthfully, in the best words you can make. Funny also needs technique, rhythm, timing and an actually good story. You can paper over meh source material with beautiful tragic prose, but there’s no faking funny.
Long form or short form?
Short on words but burning forever in your brain.
Poetry or prose?
Prose. I always love one poem, buy the book, and read only the poem I already love.
Boxers or kickboxers?
Boxers - I love their velvety ears and their fawn-and-white coats are so pretty.
Cloned or frozen?
Burn baby burn!
Book you read and reread?
Dorothy Sayers’ Gaudy Night. Ostensibly a mystery, but mostly an examination of how women can marry and still maintain their creative/intellectual selves. Plus it’s a charming picture of Oxford in the 1930s.
When writing is going well…
I’m weeping in the cafe, but that’s better than doing it at home where my husband finds it deeply disturbing.
Desert Island Book?
A blank notebook with a lot of pages, because open time and no internet will be awesome.
Bio: Allison K Williams is a writer and editor living in Dubai, where pork products are sold in a small back room of the supermarket. It’s like buying meat porn.
